Gin Rummy is one of the most popular two-player card games in the world, combining a mix of tactical strategy, memory, and simple arithmetic. Played with a standard 52-card deck, the primary goal of the game is to organize your hand into valid combinations while minimizing unmatched cards.
Core Rules and Gameplay Mechanics
Each player is dealt 10 cards at the start of the round, with the remaining cards forming the Stock (draw pile) facing down, and the top card placed face-up next to it to start the Discard pile.
- Turn Structure: On your turn, you must draw one card—either the top card from the Stock or the top card from the Discard pile. To complete your turn, you must discard one card from your hand face-up onto the Discard pile.
- Forming Melds: Players aim to group their 10 cards into Melds, which consist of:
- Sets: Three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., three Queens or three 8s).
- Runs: Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 7, 8, and 9 of Hearts).
- Deadwood Points: Any card in your hand that is not part of a valid set or run is considered Deadwood. Each card carries a point value (Aces are worth 1 point, face cards are worth 10 points, and number cards carry their face value).
Ending the Round
The round ends when a player successfully reduces their Deadwood score to a low threshold (usually 10 points or fewer) and chooses to Knock, or when a player arranges all 10 cards into valid melds with zero deadwood to achieve a Gin.
By paying close attention to which cards your opponent draws and discards, you can deduce their strategy, hold onto key cards to block them, and secure a winning hand.
